Social Media

Dedman College encourages faculty, staff, and students to engage thoughtfully and professionally on social media, recognizing that we all help shape how audiences experience the College and SMU.

Social media can be an effective tool for sharing research, promoting events and achievements, building community, and connecting with students, alumni, and the broader public, and these guidelines are intended to support the responsible and strategic use of social media across the College.

Some departments within Dedman College choose to manage their own social media channels. Before launching a new account, or continuing an existing one, it鈥檚 important to think strategically about whether maintaining a social presence is the right fit for your program.

Consider the following questions:

  • What are you hoping to accomplish through social media, and how does it support your department鈥檚 goals?
  • Do you have a steady stream of meaningful content to share on a regular basis?
  • Who are you trying to reach, and are those audiences active on the platforms you鈥檙e considering?
  • Does your team have the time and resources to consistently manage the account, including content creation, posting, audience engagement, monitoring messages, and sourcing visuals?

An inactive or poorly maintained account can create a negative impression and may be less effective than having no account at all.

Building and sustaining a successful social media presence requires ongoing time, planning, and attention. The Dedman College Marketing and Communications team is available to help departments evaluate their options and determine the most effective approach.

If you manage a social media account, it is important to review . Protecting your social media accounts is important. Be sure to take appropriate action if the person managing the account leaves your department. It can be very difficult to regain access to a social account that has been abandoned.
